When it comes to authentic Davao cuisine, nothing beats the comforting taste of breakfast at Del Mar Painitan in Bangkerohan. Nestled beside Fruitasan Mo on Marfori Street, this quaint spot offers not just your typical Pinoy breakfast but a nostalgic trip back to flavors that remind you of simpler times.
The Sikwate and Putomaya Combo
Let’s start with what Del Mar Painitan is famous for—their sikwate (traditional hot chocolate) paired with putomaya (sticky rice).
The sikwate is rich, thick, and decadent, perfectly complementing the soft and fragrant putomaya that’s subtly sweet and coconut-infused.
This combo is the heart and soul of traditional Davao merienda, offering a warm hug in every bite and sip. For those who love starting their day with local flavors, this is an absolute must-try!
Silog Meals for Every Appetite
For those who prefer a heartier breakfast, Del Mar Painitan offers a variety of silog meals (fried rice, egg, and your choice of viand).
Their Chixsilog (fried chicken),
Lumpiasilog (fried spring rolls),
and Chosilog (Chorizo) are all priced affordably at P65.
If you're craving something from the sea, the Bangsilog (milkfish) at P150
and Danggit (dried fish) at P65 offer a satisfying combination of salty and savory.
Each meal comes with perfectly fried eggs and flavorful garlic rice, making it a filling breakfast that won’t break the bank.
Sweet Treats: Biko and Sapin-Sapin
Now, if you have a sweet tooth, Del Mar Painitan won’t disappoint. Their Biko (sticky rice cake) is a standout for just P35, with its chewy, rich texture and a perfect hint of sweetness. Unfortunately, during our visit, their Sapin-Sapin was sold out (P40)—a testament to how well-loved this colorful layered rice cake is. If you’re lucky enough to grab one, it’s said to be just as delightful as the Biko!
Since the Sapin-Sapin was already sold out, we decided to try their Cassava Jelly and Empanada, and both were absolutely yummy!
Mami, Palabok, and More
The menu extends beyond breakfast, with other comforting dishes like Mami Bones (P65), a hearty noodle soup that warms the soul.
Their Palabok (P50) is also a crowd favorite, topped generously with shrimp sauce and chicharron bits.
For dessert, their Halo-Halo (P55/65) offers a refreshing and budget-friendly treat, perfect for cooling down on a hot day.
Kinutil and Tsocolate with Milk
If you're in the mood for something warm and indulgent, try their Kinutil (P80), a unique chocolate drink with a kick. For those who prefer a milder treat, their Tsocolate with milk is a smoother alternative to the traditional sikwate. Also perfect for the Puto Maya.
What I truly love about Del Mar Painitan is its ability to transport you back to the familiar comforts of Filipino food while maintaining affordable prices. The dishes are simple yet packed with flavor, and the ambiance, though modest, gives you that authentic Davao vibe. Whether you're coming for the famed sikwate or just want to enjoy a hearty breakfast, Del Mar Painitan is a place you don’t want to miss.
For Dabawenyos and visitors alike, Del Mar Painitan offers more than just food—it offers a true taste of tradition. With its homey vibe, excellent menu lineup, and budget-friendly prices, this spot is definitely worth a visit.
